An overview of our journey, from inception to today

Melodrum Trio was born in 2014 in Turin, emerging from the collaboration between two contrasting yet complementary musicians: Francesco Brancato, a jazz drummer with roots in progressive rock, and Salvatore Spano, a jazz pianist with a classical academic background as a organist and composer.
The vision behind the project was to craft an original, modern jazz repertoire while staying deeply connected to European musical traditions—just as mainstream jazz has drawn inspiration from American musicals and popular songs.

This concept naturally shaped their first project, commissioned by the Turin Conservatory under the guidance of renowned pianist Dado Moroni. The focus was on melodrama, the European counterpart to the American musical, which also inspired the group’s name. The result was a reimagining and adaptation of nine  opera arias, each centered on a female character. With contributions from Luca Curcio on double bass, Emanuele Cisi on tenor saxophone, and Gilson Silveira on percussion, these reinterpretations culminated in their self-produced debut CD, *Perspectives*.

Following a series of live performances and collaborations with renowned musicians such as double bass players Furio di Castri and Marco Piccirillo, as well as saxophonist Alfredo Ponissi, the Melodrum project evolves into a permanent trio. This transformation is marked by the addition of double bass player Salvatore Maltana, whose extensive experience in both jazz and the ethnic/popular music scene enriches the group, completing its vision of cultural fusion and artistic exploration.

With this newfound balance and creative synergy, the trio embarks on crafting new material inspired by the music of Antonio Vivaldi. This work, commissioned by the Rotary Club and the Music Conservatory of Turin, culminates in the release of the album "Tony's Dream" in 2018 under the MGJR label. The album presents a vivid musical narrative, imagining Vivaldi's journey to early 20th century America, blending classical roots with modern influences.

During the global pause between 2020 and 2022, a deep exploration of the profound role of music in society—both past and present—unfolded. This journey of reflection inspired a collection of songs that examine the connection between music and spirituality across diverse cultures, spanning different eras and regions. The result is a captivating compilation of 9 songs brought together in the album *“The Man, The Earth, The Sky”, enriched by the evocative recitations of Michela Atzeni and the harmonious voices of the Lasallian Children's Choir from Grugliasco (TO).

Recorded in Turin by Alessandro Taricco and Gianpiero Ferrando and meticulously mixed and mastered in Cagliari by Marti Jane Robertson, the album was released in 2022 under the Japanese label DaVinci Jazz. Upon its release, it garnered widespread acclaim from both audiences and critics alike.
